Dior brings back a noughties handbag staple: the Saddle

Dior’s Saddle bag made its debut back in the Spring-Summer 2000 ready-to-wear collection, designed by Dior’s then creative director John Galliano. Galliano sought inspiration in the world of equestrianism and came up with bag that was instantly captivating and seen on the arm of every stylish celebrity.

As trends of the 2000s era start to resurface, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s present creative director has revisited this classic mini bag offering her own takes on the trendy design. There’s an eye catching boho-inspired patchwork take on the design as well as other contemporary leather designs that feature a heavily embellished thick shoulder strap. One version comes covered all over with the Dior logo, a reminder of another 2000s trend: logomania.

“I thought this collection would be an opportunity to revive its timeless beauty. I consider this icon of the house’s recent history the perfect accessory to deal with this battle that is daily life. Indeed, the saddle bag is a bag that is worn in exactly the same way as a shirt or jacket, and it’s so comfortable to wear with its long strap that you almost forget it’s there. The saddle bag is also practical because it allows you to carry everything you need with you. It’s for this reason that I wanted it larger and more robust, but also very colorful, embroidered or with beaded fringe because, like a chameleon, it adapts to all situations,” said Chiuri.

We’re definitely partial to the red and millennial pink versions which are sleek and modern on their own, but divine when combined with those scene stealing embellished straps.
