Rare 1787 Brasher gold coin sold for $7.4 million

When it comes to rarity, the American Brasher Doubloon is good enough to have any coin collector or numismatist staring in awe. The Blanchard and Company, Inc, a New Orleans-based coin and precious metals company, recently sold this one-of-a-kind coin minted privately in 1787. With a price tag of $7.4 million, this is one of the highest prices ever paid for a gold coin, and was purchased by a Wall Street investment firm with the identity of the buyer and seller kept under wraps. Containing 26.66 grams of gold, the coin was minted by Ephraim Brasher, a goldsmith and silversmith, and was worth just $15 on its conception. Also considered the first American-made gold coin denominated in dollars, this Brasher Doubloon is historic and worth a place in a treasure chest.
