World’s most expensive white wine fetches £75,000
Now and again we hear of some vintage wine breaking the world record at auctions. This time we have a 200 year-old bottle of white wine which was sold for a record amount of £75,000 (about $124,000). The 1811 bottle of Chateau d’Yquem was recently bought by a private collector and career sommelier Christian Vanneque. Even though red wines have sold for more than this amount, a 200 year-old white wine is a rarity because it is a sweet wine. The high levels of sugar and the natural acidity of the grape has allowed this wine to be preserved well past its due date.
So the big question on everybody’s mind is, what is Vanneque going to do with this wine? For now he plans to display it in his Bali restaurant when it opens in September of this year. As for tasting the wine, Vanneque has decided to wait until 2017 when he will celebrate his 50 year career as a sommelier.
