7 Ways to sun-proof your skin this summer

Summers in New Delhi can hot and muggy with humidity levels shooting through the roof. Despite sweltering heat, sunburns and incessantly blazing sunshine, who doesn’t want to be outside, swimming, playing catch in the backyard or soaking up every bit of summer in the city before it ends. While summer means fun in the sun- the frizz in your hair, sweat on your brow and dull skin on the other hand can be deceiving. But here are 7 ways to sun-proof your skin (and look gorgeous) in the sun:

1. Stay hydrated
During the summer, it’s easy for your skin to become parched and dehydrated. Excessive sun exposure can result in dry skin, wrinkles, frown-lines and dull appearance. Drink at least 1.5-2 liters of water throughout the day to hydrate your skin and flush out toxins to have a clearer skin, shinier hair and better health. Avoid drinking caffeine, alcohol or tea, as this may lead to dehydration.

2. Eat healthy
A diet rich in flavonoids and antioxidants will help to ensure a healthy and glowing skin. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are rich in anti-oxidants to reduce the damaging effects of sunlight.

3. Wear protective clothing
Clothing is the first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays and protects us by absorbing or blocking much of this radiation. While it’s not always practical to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants if you are sunbathing or playing catch, at least try to wear a T-shirt or a beach cover-up.
For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim to shade the face, head, ears, and neck. Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible to protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun exposure.

4. Avoid overexposure
You can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under an umbrella a, tree, or other shelter before you need relief from the sun.

5. Avoid spraying perfume on your skin in the sun
In summers, it is recommended that you spray perfume on your clothes rather than your skin as the psoralens in perfume can permanently stain your skin when they react with the sun.

6. Give your skin a break
With more moisture in the air, you don’t need as much on your skin. Using less makeup in summers allows your skin to breathe. Switch to lighter lotions or skip moisturizer altogether and just use sunblock. To prevent excess oil from clogging pores, use a salicylic acid or exfoliating cleanser every alternate day. https://www.colorescience.com/products/sunforgettable-mineral-sunscreen-brush-spf-50

7. Use sunscreen
Sure we all know the drill-applying sunscreen. When to apply? This is where most people make the biggest mistake. They wait until they are out in the sun to apply sunscreen or feel like they have already done their duty by applying a layer under makeup at about 8 in the morning when they set course for work. As much it’s important to apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before stepping out in the sun, it needs to be reapplied every two hours as sunscreens lose most of their efficacy after approximately 90 minutes. There is nothing worse than applying your makeup and then realizing two hours later that you need to reapply your sunscreen. But is anyone really going to apply on another layer over foundation?

However, we are big fans of Colorscience Sunforttable Mineral Sunscreen Brush because they make sunscreen protection so damn easy. It is a lightweight mineral powder with a barely-there feel that provides a safe, non-irritating, instant UVA and UVB sun protection.

The clear weightless powder comes in large tube with a retractable brush on one end, filled with mineral sunscreen (SPF 30/35/ 50). The self-dispensing powder brush makes it easy to apply and re-apply throughout the day for continued coverage. All you have to do is sweep it over face and body to release powder or use small circular strokes to release more powder. This brush-on mineral formula is free of chemicals, colorants and odors and is ideal for just about anyone, even people with rosacea or eczema. Because Sunforttable Mineral Sunscreen is non-greasy (thank God for that!) even people with oily skin or those prone to acne can use it liberally without worrying about another break out.

Another reason why we love these power sticks is that they are super portable so you can pop one in your purse or pocket and have sun protection on the go. Also, because it gives you a choice of colors to choose from, you can find a shade that matches your skin tone perfectly well. In the picture below, I am using SPF 50/ Medium.
