The news of Mercedes killing Maybach in 2013 was already known to us, but it seems more like it has gained further momentum with Volkswagen AG’s Bentley vying ex-Maybach customers Samuel L. Jackson, Jay-Z and King Juan Carlos. The Pulp Fiction star, the hip-hop artist and the Spanish Monarch are being approached by the British high-end car maker, in sync with Daimler AG’s move to kill off the ultra luxury brand. Besides Jay-Z, the brand also has Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich and the Sultan of Brunei among its following. Bentley CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer has already heard from some Maybach clients and is apparently in the process of writing to the others. While Daimler is currently focusing on core Mercedes brand’s top-flight S-Class, Bentley and BMW AG’s Rolls Royce Motor Cars are hoping to turn the attention of Maybach clients to their plushest models- Mulsanne and Phantom.
Although Daimler declined to comment on Bentley’s initiative, it confirmed that the closure of Maybach will not affect availability of parts and support for existing vehicles. The move to shut down Maybach was taken as it hasn’t lived up to the company’s original sales expectations. I’m wondering why Daimler is hiking the prices of its existing Maybach sedans when it isn’t doing so well and its time to haul the curtains.
