These handbags launched in-front of the press during the Cruise 2013 presentation in May are crafted using sustainable, vegan materials and environmentally sensitive dyeing and finishing processes that share the modest elegant and signature design details of Bottega Veneta’s renowned leather goods. The Carta Giapponese clutch is shaped out of tightly woven washi, which is a delicate paper obtained from the bark of the fast-growing kozo tree.


Taking a cue from what customers are demanding leather alternatives these days, Bottega Veneta Creative Director Tomas Maier said, “I decided to make the jersey and paper bags after speaking with customers who wanted sophisticated, handcrafted bags that are non-leather and earth-friendly.” He further added, “We are a luxury lifestyle brand known for our handcrafted leather goods—obviously we don’t claim to be vegan.

However, it is anticipated that these handbags will appear in store in late fall.
