Caran d’Ache, the Geneva maison de haute écriture, has combined its expertise with French crystal maker Lalique to create limited-edition crystal writing instruments. Noble and precious materials like ceramic, blackened gold, rhodium-coated silver, diamonds are brought together to create three original styles of writing instruments- Black Crystal, White Crystal; and Crystal and Diamonds.
The writing instruments draw design inspiration from the famous Coutard Motif, created by René Lalique in 1935 when the order was placed for the fountain that carries his name. The motif, representing a sprinkle of water droplets covers the pen. It evokes both Art Nouveau in the rounded form of the droplets and Art Deco in their meticulous positioning
Lalique master jewelers have carefully set the iconic crystal at the tip of the pen using the LS technique to create a sumptuous crown of sparkling light around the crystal. Depending on the edition, the high-purity diamonds are set one by one in the same way to flow gently over these fine writing instruments, highlighting their perfect forms and materials. The pens are coated with a sprinkle of ceramic ‘water’ droplets that add extra comfort when writing and also reflect the artistry of the two manufacturers.
In addition to the fine writing instruments, Lalique has also designed a special inkbottle in satin-brushed crystal to accompany the premium Crystal and Diamonds edition. The Crystal and Diamonds edition and its ink bottle are presented in a beautifully lacquered box, created in solid sycamore wood and decorated with a shower of crystal cabochons.
