Why did the Karl Lagerfeld Barbie sell out so quickly?

The limited edition Barbie Lagerfeld, a version of the doll dressed to look like fashion mogul Karl Lagerfeld has come and gone. Net-a-Porter had 999 units of the Barbie to sell worldwide and they sold out almost immediately after they went on sale Monday. Damn! We waited so long to get it and now it’s sold everywhere except eBay where it is being resold for anywhere from $900 to $3500, almost four times the original price.

The Mattel doll created hysteria during Paris Fashion Week, and it’s not hard to believe that they sold out so quickly. Forget the fact that we already worship at the alters of Lagerfeld, when you cross brands like Karl Lagerfeld and Barbie with high-fashion retailer Net-A-Porter over a ‘limited edition’ collectible, it is bound to lead to a success uproar.

Dressed in the German couturier’s signature style, Barbie Lagerfeld borrows from Karl’s iconic silhouette and accents. The doll wears a tailored black jacket, white high-collared men’s shirt with French cuffs and black satin cravat finished off with fitted black jeans featuring the iconic all-over head print. The exclusive doll is adorned in accessories that include black fingerless gloves, sunglasses, black ankle boots and a black leather purse with silver metallic accents.

Karl Lagerfeld has consistently reinvented himself through his prolific body of work. In addition to his eponymous label, he has been a major creative force behind brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel and Fendi. So what if we didn’t get our hands on the miniature version of Karl Lagerfeld, the Godfather of the fashion industry has been immortalized with life in plastic forever, and we totally love it.
