KitKat may be a beloved treat all over the world, but in Japan, the familiar chocolate covered wafer gets really creative. In Japan, KitKat flavors range from familiar orange and strawberry to the outlandish potato, pumpkin and even soy sauce! Knowing the immense popularity and range of Kit Kat in Japan, it should come as no surprise that Nestlé Japan Ltd has become the first company in the world to launch natural pink chocolate.
Ruby Chocolate was introduced to the world last year and is the first new natural variant of chocolate since white chocolate. Remember, that no colors or additives are added to Ruby chocolate, it is a difference in the processing method that gives this product its distinctive color and fruity flavour.
Nestlé’s “Sublime Ruby” KitKat is created in partnership with Barry Callebaut with the help of chef and patissier Yasumasa Takagi. This flavour is on sale as a limited edition online and at Japan’s Kit Kat Chocolatory boutique stores for 400 yen (US$3.60) per bar.
“I am very pleased that our innovative breakthrough ruby chocolate has come to life so quickly through our partnership with Nestlé and the pioneering KitKat brand in Japan,” said Antoine de Saint-Affrique, CEO of Barry Callebaut.
Chef Takagi who also develops other flavours of KitKat in Japan said, “I am extremely honoured to be a part of this landmark moment in the history of chocolate, with which I have worked intimately for over thirty years. I have created an especially simple KitKat that allows you to enjoy the characteristic fruity fragrance and subtle acidity of ruby cacao to the fullest.”
