The Mediterranean sailing season really gets going in April each year and so to celebrate here is a quick look at some of the best places to stay for boat lovers. From the Greek to the Balearic Islands, these Mediterranean villas all have their own private boat moorings, breath-taking views of the sea and private swimming pools to boot.
Perhaps the most famous location for sailing in the Mediterranean, the Greek Islands are the spiritual home for water lovers. For cooler conditions visit in late April and May, or if you prefer blazing sunshine on the water take trip during the mid-season months of June, July or August. The Greek sailing races kick off with the International Cyclades Regatta in the first week of July, followed by the Aegean Rally in late July and the Ionian Rally the first week of August.

No. 5 – Sailor’s Retreat, Lefkada, Greece
Sailor’s Retreat is found on the Greek island of Lefkada, one of the most popular places in the Mediterranean for a sailing holiday.
Sailor’s Retreat sleeps up to eight people with four bedrooms and enjoys open living areas spread out over two floors. Nestled on the Geni Peninsula with its own private jetty and boat hire included, this villa has a wonderfully grown-up feel which is reflected in its oak and Italian marble furnishings. Complete with a spacious al fresco terrace, view over the water and a private swimming pool, Sailor’s Retreat is also within walking distance to local tavernas. Water skiing and wakeboarding can be organised in front of the villa but for swimming guests will find clearer waters along the beaches down the coast.
The villa is eight kilometres from the town of Nidri on the island of Lefkada, one of the most beautiful islands on the west coast of Greece. As well as being home to paradise-like beaches, Lefkada also has mountainous and forest vistas to explore. The closest beach to Sailor’s Retreat is found at Desimi, 4 kilometres away, where visitors can enjoy white shores and turquoise waters all surrounded by lush green forest.
No. 4 – Alitheia, Corfu, Greece
Featured as part of CV Villa’s Private Collection, Alitheia is situated in arguably the very best spot on Corfu’s north east coast. Alitheia is within walking distance of the town of Kassiopi, making it the perfect location for a secluded holiday that’s still within easy reach of the hustle and bustle of a lively harbour town. Kassiopi harbour square is one of the most popular places for guests to visit with a mix of trendy and traditional restaurants and shops. The town has a diving centre and also had facilities for water skiing and paragliding.
No. 3 – The Beach House, Lefkada, Greece
Another Lefkada property – but you can’t have too many with Greece holding the famous Aegean Regatta, Aegean Rally and the International Cyclades Regatta this year.
The Beach House boasts views over the neighbouring Greek islands, has its own boat mooring and plenty of terraces to enjoy a morning coffee as the sun rises or something stronger in the evenings. Guests are welcomed by friendly staff and water skiing and wakeboarding can be organised in front of the villa. The Beach House sleeps 10 people with five bedrooms and shower rooms and boasts direct access to the beach as well as its own private pool. Guests who fancy themselves as a foodie can put their chef skills to good use with the villa’s built-in-barbeque and wood burning oven, the best way to cook up some delicious and authentic Mediterranean food.
The Beach House has a villa directly below it where guests can relax on white shores with the clear blue waters at their feet. Desimi beach is roughly five kilometres along the coast and guests can take a short boat ride to reach the nearest town of Nidri.
No. 2 – Spirit of the Sea, Menorca, Balearic Islands
The Spirit of the Sea sits on Millionaire’s Row in the peaceful bay of San Antonio in Menorca. With a jetty and private mooring, visitors can pop across the bay to visit Mahon or hug the coast to discover charming fishing villages for a local lunch or dinner. If you don’t use your own boat, there is a water-taxi service available to visit Mahon, and Menorca’s beaches are all easily reached by car.
The house has been recently renovated and is elegantly furnished with lots of different entertaining areas and a myriad of terraces and quiet places to sit and enjoy the fabulous views. A superb roof terrace with its own kitchen, dining and seating area is the focal point of the house with wonderful views over the harbour and opening onto the oval pool and BBQ terrace. A shady vine covered pergola is the perfect place to lounge in the evening watching the sun set over the water.
The large sitting room has been chicly decorated in neutral tones with a separate large dining area (with table seating up to 12) featuring sliding windows opening to the view of the sea. No. 1 – Al Olivar, Meganisi, Greece
With a private jetty overlooking the Ionian islands, this Meganisi villa is perfect for water sport lovers and boat owners. As well as a private pool, Al Olivar boasts 1.25 acres of grounds, an alfresco living and dining area, two kayaks and its own Topper sailboat for guests to use. Any fish you catch whilst out on the boat can be deliciously cooked on the villa’s barbeque terrace – perfect for winding down after a day on the water.
Al Olivar captures all that’s best about contemporary holiday villa design. The main entrance leads into the spacious open-plan living areas and wall-length sliding glass doors in the living area offer views and access to the outdoor dining areas and the pool beyond.
