We’ve always known surfing to be all about athletic bodies, golden tans and tall blue waves, but now it’s also about edgy, modern design. Fashion’s resident rebel Alexander Wang recently joined hands with Australian surfboard company Haydenshapes in a collaboration resulting in five marbled surfboards that are combine a high energy sports vibe with elusive artistic design that is Wang’s signature.
The artwork for the boards was co-created by Wang and Hayden Cox (founder of Haydenshapes) and Cox created each board by hand through a process that involved digitally printing photographs of unique marble slabs onto silk before transferring the design to the Hypto Krypto boards. The boards will be on display on a unique “cage” mount with a black sand wave looming in the background at Wang’s New York flagship store located at 103 Grand Street. Whether the pieces will be available for purchase is unknown.
If we weren’t fans of surfing before, we certainly are now! The boards are stunning not only from a visual art element but also from a utilitarian standpoint as the Hypto Krypto model of surfboard was recently awarded Surfboard of the Year by the Australian Surf and Board Sports Industry Association. We can already see magazine editors rushing to feature these in their summer editorials!
