Paul McCarthy designs skateboards for charity in collaboration with Skateroom

Renowned artist Paul McCarthy is recognized for his paintings, performance, photography and mixed media work that confront our perception of daily happenings and the darker side of Western culture. The artist has now partnered with the arts organization The Skateroom for a charitable project. The photos he had taken of objects he had used in his performances have made their way to a line of skateboards. He has come up with 10 limited edition decks that touch upon the obsession of skateboards as art pieces.

paul-mccarthy-skateroom-2The Skateroom, which is based in Brussels, encourages artists to enrich skate art history by producing beautiful works that lend their profits to empower the less privileged. The proceeds will go to the international NGO Skatesistan, which will fund the first skate school on the African continent. The main goal of the institution will be to teach skateboarding, but will also include connecting children with educational and leadership opportunities.
Paul McCarthy hopes that people will use the skateboards and not just use them as a showpiece. The skateboards are available online through the MoMA store for $350. There are just 250 board sand the first 35 editions of each reserved for a Signed Collector’s Set in a custom flight case.
