East India leather – Hidesign’s secret
Puducherry-based leather good brands, Hidesign, has set up a small exhibit at Delhi’s Select City Walk Mall that promises to take you on a historic journey with accessories made from East India (E.I) leather. This specific kind of hide is strong, luminous, and has a unique natural grain and is known for beautiful blonde sheen that glows through any colour that is hand rubbed onto it.
This traditional method of vegetable tanning was discovered by the East India Company in the early 1800. In fact, by 1856 the British army used this leather for its accessories. Primarily crafted in Tamil Nadu, this unique leather was re-discovered in the 1970s by Dilip Kapur, Hidesign’s Founder and President. He learnt that a number of notable fashion houses had used East India leather for their luxury footwear and bags in the past.
