Last month at the Detroit Motor Show, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class made its debut in G550 form which has 416hp on tap from its 4.0-liter biturbo V8. The German automaker has now revealed its faster and more potent sibling with the AMG badging – the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. Under the hood is the same handcrafted 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine, but the power on AMG G63 has been bumped to a thundering 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. It’s an increase of over 161 horsepower and 177 pound-feet over the standard G550. An AMG-specific nine-speed automatic channels the power to all four wheels through 4Matic all-wheel drive system that now has a 40:60 front to rear torque split. Mercedes claims that the AMG G63 will hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, which is 0.9 seconds quicker than the old model, and has its top speed limited to 137 mph. The optional Driver’s Package raises the limit to 149 mph.
The German marque says it developed an all-new front and rear suspension with coil springs to make the G63 more dynamic and also comfortable than the outgoing model. Adaptive dampers come standard on the G63 offering three settings, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. In terms of visual touches to differentiate the G63 from the other G-Wagens, it gets larger wheels, more chrome, model-specific bumpers front and back, air inlets, multi-beam headlights, LED taillights and an AMG GT R-inspired new front grille. Pricing is yet to be announced, but the new Mercedes-AMG G63 will make its official debut on March 6 at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
