A Jet-engine silencer is being worked on

Although the drone of the jet engine is reassuring to a passenger, it’s a source of noise pollution to those reside in the vicinity of an airport. Dimitri Papamoschou at the University of California has filed a patent, earlier this year, for a jet-engine silencer. Apparently the source of the jet engine’s noise is from the turbulence in fast-flowing air from the engine. Dimitri has formulated a way to separate the expunged air into two channels of high and low speeds. The high-speed air is channeled to the top so the noise is directed upwards. If it works noise on the ground could be reduced by more than half (about 6 dB). Although his idea is still in nascent stages, hopefully a permanent solution will be out soon.
