Uber brings ex-NASA engineer in board to develop “flying cars”

Uber had roped in former NASA engineer Mark Moore to help bring a futuristic vision to life. Moore will join the Uber team as the director of engineering for Uber Elevate. Does this mean Uber will take to the skies soon? It certainly looks like it!

Uber first expressed an interest in flight in a White Paper in October. The paper talked about “vertical take-off and landing” on-demand (VTOL) aviation (you can translate that to more-or-less mean an airborne cab service!). Moore consulted on this paper.

Nikhil Goel, head of product for advanced programs at Uber, said in a statement, “Uber continues to see its role as an accelerant-catalyst to the entire ecosystem, and we are excited to have Mark joining us to work with manufacturers and stakeholders as we continue to explore the use case described in our whitepaper.”

Does this mean flying cars will be here soon? Not exactly, there are as yet many obstacles in the path of this innovation including regulations and restrictions. However, it’s still good to know that this piece of sci-fi might actually come to life eventually!
