Omega introduced a stunning lineup of watches at the 2014 BaselWorld which included the new Constellation Pluma and Speedmaster Mark II timepieces. But amongst the Omega’s newly launched was a limited edition watch Omega Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” that celebrates the 45th anniversary the historic moon landing of 1969. A couple of years back, Omega had introduced a limited edition Speedmaster Professional to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Apollo 15, but this timepiece is dedicated to the iconic watch that was worn by Buzz Aldrin on the moon in 1969 as a part of the Apollo 11 mission. The Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 45th Anniversary watch has a 42-mm case made of fully brushed grade-2 titanium and a black PVD dial with gold elements.
The watch has been designed to evoke the colors of the moon and the Apollo 11 lunar and command modules which give it a simple yet elegant appearance. The gorgeous-looking black PVD dial, with its 30-minute and 12-hour recorders and small seconds sub-dial, is made using a special laser which creates the design elements on the watch’s face by removing the material surrounding the name, sub-dial numerals and hour markers. 18K red gold is used for making the indexes and hour, minute, seconds and sub-dial hands and the central chronograph hand is red gold-plated. The 45th anniversary watch also features a brown, coated-nylon fabric strap which Omega says was inspired by the NATO straps that have equipped the timepieces issued to military personnel since the end of the 1950s. The watch is limited to 1,969 pieces and is priced at $7,700.
