A lounge chair designed by Apple designer Marc Newson recently sold for $3.7 million at a London auction. The chair which sold at Phillips has set a new record with its price becoming the most money ever paid for a piece by a living designer. Newson is known for his design work for apple including collaborations with Jony Ive for products like special edition Apple EarPods, a Leica camera, and a red Mac Pro.
Newson’s record busting chair the “Lockheed Lounge” is an aluminum and fiberglass couch, the Australian designer once confessed to the BBC that this seat was “not really meant to be comfortable.” The lounge chair is one of 15 created by the designer in 1990; the sales of these couches through the years have set multiple auction records.
The chair may be more of a celebrity than its creator in some circles as it was used in the video for Madonna’s 1993 hit song “Rain.”
