Goodbye, Candle in the wind and more – Handwritten lyrics to Elton John’s biggest songs may fetch $1 million at auction

After the release of ‘Me’ – a book that spills the beans on Elton John’s tryst with drugs and alcohol, a set of handwritten lyrics to some of the singer’s most renowned hits will soon be available for sale. The original set entails lyrics for musical numbers such as – Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road, Candle in the Wind, and Bennie and the Jets, and will be offered at part of Bonhams’ sale of music memorabilia in Los Angeles on Dec. 9.

The exclusive collection of six handwritten lyrics comes from Maxine Feibelman Taupin’s (ex-wife of Bernie Taupin, an English songwriter and John’s longtime collaborator) personal treasure trove. Each of the pieces are hand-written by her ex-beau, with one of them being annotated by John himself. Taupin is said to have acquired the lyrics after her divorce in what is expected to be an ‘accidental turn of events’.

Commenting on the collection, Taupin in a statement said, “When Bernie had completed an album’s worth of lyrics, we would pay Elton a visit; I was always amazed how prolific they were,” She further added, “When I heard the finished songs, I was instantly transported to that magical place these two creative forces have been taking us all to for so many years.” The lyrical set or as described by Bonhams’ Giles Moon as “Taupin’s careful word craft and his famously inconsistent spelling” is estimated to fetch $ 1 million on sale.
