An unnamed buyer in Hong Kong has created a world auction record by splashing out the jaw dropping amount of $17.8 million for a pink diamond ring. The ring features a flawless fancy vivid pink diamond which was expected to sell at just over $15 million but exceeded expectations dramatically. The pear shaped, 8.41 carat stone has sold for nearly $2 million per carat!
The super rare pink diamond is internally flawless, making it a most desirable purchase for diamond lovers. The stone was said to have attracted some keen competition in the course of its sale by Sotheby’s Asia. We’ve seen some stunning pink diamonds in the past, but this one with its classic shape and vivid color is definitely one of the most beautiful specimens we’ve ever seen. Just last year the stunning cushion cut, 34.65 carat Princie pink diamond was sold for close to $40 million by Christie’s.
Interestingly, the stone was mounted on a ring, making us wonder if the buyer will discard the ring and display the diamond on its own, or whether we’ll soon see some lucky lady sporting this pink bling on her hand. Now that’s an engagement selfie, we’d pay to see.
