This Willy Wonka-styled chocolate factory in the Netherlands will have a roller coaster running through its buildings


There’s nothing that chocolate cannot make better! Swearing by this and raring to give enthusiasts a new level of sugar high is the soon-to-be-built chocolate factory in Zaanstad in the Netherlands. Designed by Amsterdam-based architecture firm – Search, the megastructure is a Willy Wonka themed chocolate heaven complete with massive buildings and a roller coaster running through it! Yes, that’s right!

The chocolate factory-cum-theme park will be situated in Zaandam, just north of Amsterdam, and is estimated to take three years to build. It is conceptualized by Tony’s Chocolonely – a Dutch confectionery company s launched in 2005 that boasts of a ‘slave-free approach’ in its operations. The marquee had announced plans for a similar venture similar back in 2018 and had touted it to be ‘a total experience, where one can learn and experience everything about chocolate, the problems in the cocoa industry, and what Tony’s Chocolonely does about it’.

An initial rendering of the chocolate plant which was recently unveiled illustrates how it will consist of three main parts: a converted former red-brick flour warehouse, a red pavilion housing the roller coaster, and a more contemporary factory unit. The new complex will cost more than $112 million approximately and is expected to create around 600 jobs with a capacity of hosting up to 500,000 visitors a year.
