American Express Centurion Card: An invite-only Credit Card for the affluent Indians

The famous ‘Black Card’ comes to India. Rarely seen and always recognised American Express Centurion Card is unarguably one of the world’s most exclusive cards. American Express introduced the Centurion Card in 1999 to cater to a more affluent customer segment. Since, then it is catering to the world’s top most people who are ready to shell out Rs 2 lakh as joining fee and Rs 2.5 lakh as annual membership charges.

The exclusive card with an Rs 10-crore credit limit is targeted to the ever-growing list of billionaires and projections of highest increase in ‘Private Financial Wealth.’ Since the card is a charge card and not a credit card, there is no interest rate, and the full balance must be paid every month. The Centurion offers special services and benefits to its members. American Express is secretive about most of the details, except to say they include “rare” travel, food and entertainment experiences. The real value of membership may be in the form of personal services offered by the concierge, such as reminder calls prior to anniversaries and birthdays, personal shoppers, or tickets to sold-out events.

The American Express Centurion Card or “Black Card is an invite only card although the terms and conditions may be viewed here. In India, 200 or so very wealthy Indians now possess a rectangular piece of titanium, but American Express does not publicly disclose the names and details of the card holder.
