Nike has secured legions of fans and followers thanks to the popularity of their trendy Air Max sneakers. Models, editors and Instagram stars all seem to love these ubiquitous shoes with their distinctive air cushioned sole. 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the Air Max 97 and Nike is celebrating the occasion by giving the classic sneakers a dazzling (and we do mean that literally) makeover. The key additions are over 55,000 micro sized Swarovski crystals which give the shoes a textured, glittering look.
The concept for the NIKE Air Max 97 LX Swarovski edition was born when NikeWomen designers visited the Swarovski archives in Austria. On discovering Swarovski’s Crystal Fabric, the designers knew they had to incorporate it into Nike’s iconic sneakers.
“We were looking to explore shine and durability in a new and innovative way, and we loved the juxtaposition of the crystal fabric’s tough sparkle to reinvent an already iconic shoe,” said Marie Crow, NIKE Material Design Director for Nikewomen Sportswear.
The fabric is made up of tiny crystals, both cut and uncut, that are clustered close together to create a distinctive shimmer.
Instead of stitching, a heat fusing technique was used to apply the fabric to the shoe and precisely mold it to the contours of the pattern.
“The Air Max 97 is a truly iconic 360-degree silhouette that has inspired us to imagine what might happen when speed meets light,” said Markus Langes-Swarovski, Swarovski Executive Board Member.
The black version was made available in the spring, and the silver one makes its debut this fall.
