Eco friendly whiskey anyone? Johnnie Walker goes green with new limited-edition paper bottles for 2021

It’s high time we embrace a sustainable way of life! And in propagating the message, Johnnie Walker through its parent company Diageo recently announced the launch of new limited-edition paper bottles for the coming year. Yes, you read that right!

Touted to be the world’s first plastic-free paper-based spirits bottle, the exclusive decanter will be made using sustainably sourced wood pulp in association with venture management company Pilot Lite. The project will be overseen through the launch of Pulpex Limited, a new sustainable packaging technology company (which will also form a partner consortium with Unilever and PepsiCo to further the technology and its use). The novel bottles are designed and developed to be 100% plastic-free and expected to be fully recyclable.

Commenting on the initiative, Diageo’s chief sustainability officer, Ewan Andrew, in a statement said, “We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence.”

Earlier in the year, Diageo also announced plans to manufacture it’s Seagram 7 Crown whiskey bottles from recycled plastic. As for Diageo’s paper whiskey bottles, they are expected to be trailed in the spring of 2021 and launched later next year.
