Review: Inside SVA’s new flagship store

Needless to say that style is all about creating something that will transcend the vagaries of time. Clothing has the power to express, define and supplement ones point of view. When I walked inside SVA’s new flagship store at Marine Drive, I saw all these beliefs come alive. And I’m glad I did…

Designed by renowned architect Ashiesh Shah, 2,000sq ft store on Marine Drive overlooks the Arabian Sea. The store is divided into four distinct sections—the bridal room, the pret room, traditional wear and menswear, with each area designed to exude a distinct vibe.

I found the store itself to be tastefully-designed with minimalistic colours, symmetrical designs and clean lines. The best part is that it has been merged with wooden and marble accents so that the store design doesn’t take away from the opulent clothing it houses. I loved how the use of terrazzo and matte marble finishing on the facade is complemented by the crisp exteriors.

The space combines modern aesthetics with elements of traditional crafts by using cane, rustic furniture, earthy pots and hand woven carpets. You’ll find a burst of potted plants and ample natural light. Going to the collection, I found it replete with relaxed separates like tunics, palazzos and airy tops in fabrics such as silks and georgettes that are easy to mix-and-match.

The silhouettes take layering to a whole effortless level. Another high-point of the collection are the drapes and eclectic geometric prints. At SVA, it’s all about intricate embroideries. There’s also a whole lot of sartorial options for the contemporary bride. I was told that the designers also extend their brand aesthetic to luxury pret, with the launch of “Arya”, their new label tailored for semi-formal and non-bridal occasions.

We put together two distinct looks with the help of team SVA and the effortless make-up by Tina Shringarpure from The Blowdry Bar. One of these was a bespoke Eid look which felt like a fresh take on the Indian aesthetic. The second look was on a more traditional side in vibrant red which screams a strong sartorial voice.

I found the collection to be exuding luxury and timelessness. Comfort is one factor that shouldn’t be overlooked while designing. And the masterpieces by SVA take this too seriously and tick all the right boxes. They’re defined by a certain exclusivity which makes these creations ones that are not easily replicated. And that alone is its biggest victory…
