Bid farewell to dreary July and welcome the month of long weekends with a full week of fun. From Chef Sujan S’ decadent and innovative monsoon menu at Olive to Vir Das and the Alien Chutney’s high on energy performance at the blueFROG, this week promises to be offbeat and off the charts both, just the way we like it. This is also a week dedicated to the fine arts. From Naseeruddin Shah and Rajit Kapur’s stellar performances in ‘A Walk in the Woods’ to Richie Mehta’s gut-wrenching movie, ‘Siddhartha’ drama enthusiasts are in for a real treat! Also, don’t forget to head to Café Infinito sometime during the week for some lip-smacking grilled gourmet goodness!

oliveOlive – Monsoon Specials
With the monsoon coming to an end here’s your last chance to catch Chef Sujan S’s delicious seasonal menu at Olive. Drop everything and rush to the restaurant for a warm and wholesome meal consisting of unique palate-pleasers like pear and endive salad, cauliflower and white onion soup, and asparagus and broad been risotto among several others. The weather-appropriate cocktails on offer are divine to say the least, try the fun Figgled Pink (brandy mixed with fig jam and lime) and spicy Apple Toddy (brandy, apple juice, star anise and mango) for a serious happy high!

Art enthusiasts will not want to miss the rare and unique ‘Taking a line for a walk’ being held at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum. Curated by the Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation, the exhibit is showcasing 45 of the some of the most fascinating drawings by a few of India’s most prominent modern artists such as FN Souza, Tyeb Mehta, Akbar Padamsee, Vasudev Gaitonde, Manjit Bawa, Sudhir Patwardhan and MF Husain among others. The focus of this wonderful showcase is to put the spotlight back onto drawing as an exemplary art form. The exhibit has been named after an interesting quote made by well-known artist Paul Klee: “A line is a dot that goes for a walk.”

a-walk-in-the-woodsA Walk in the Woods
Absolutely not to be missed is Ratna Pathak Shah’s A Walk in the Woods. The play which stars acting stalwarts like Naseeruddin Shah and Rajit Kapur is an adaptation of Lee Blessing’s 1986 Cold War drama which is in turn a real-life account of what transpired at an encounter between an American diplomat and a Soviet interlocutor. The plot of Pathak’s adapted version revolves around a meeting in Geneva between two diplomats from Pakistan and India who are trying to come to a consensus on a certain proposal which will ensure peace between the two sparring countries. This masterclass in acting with its sharp humour and brilliant direction makes for a thoroughly enjoyable watch!

If Rock music with a good dose of humour is your kind of fun then don’t miss watching Alien Chutney live at the blueFROG. The bizarre comedy-rock band offers a unique experience to its fans in terms of whacky lyrics and off-beat concepts. What’s more is that the band also features one of India’s most-loved comedians Vir Das along with his equally talented crew comprising Sidd Coutto, Gaurav Gupta, Warren Mendonsa and Kaizad Gherda. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the weekend than with this kickass fusion of comedy and music.

siddharthSiddharth – Movie
Catch the heart-wrenching story of the abduction of a 12 year old boy named Siddharth by child-traffickers and his father’s relentless pursuit to get him back. We watch as the father Mahendra a meager chain-wallah from Delhi roams the entire expanse of the country with limited resources and no connections all in the hopes of gaining his son back unharmed. What makes the film even more riveting is the fact that it has been based on true events. Directed by Canadian director Richie Mehta, the movie is a must watch for parallel cinema-goers.
