In this day and age when the young think Love is overstated and Valentine’s Day nothing more than a marketing gimmick, an 84-year-old man named Qiao Dewei showed us otherwise. Qiao Dewei loves his wife immensely and he decided the world should know how much, when he professed his love with an illumination which spells “I Love U” on the facade of a hotel on the evening of Valentine’s Day in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou city in east China.
How is anyone going to top this? Passers-by couldn’t stop gushing over how the grey-haired man said “I love you” to his wife, who was wearing a wedding dress. Images of the couple kissing in front of the 47-storey hotel went viral on Chinese microblogging service Weibo.
What is even more adorable is their love-story isn’t the extravagant relationship you’d assume it is. Married for 67 years, Qiao and his wife Liu Shixiu have had their fair share of ups and downs and in all their years together, have never done anything romantic including saying “I love you”, to each other.
“We were there for each other even through the toughest days,” said Qiao, proving it takes much more than saying ‘those magic words’ to make a marriage work.
However, Qiao finally decide it was time to say it with words and express his love to Liu in person, whose health hasn’t been great recently.
The whole thing was arranged by their grandson, a branding executive, and cost nothing (!), thanks to the (romantic-at-heart?) hotel manager, who thought it would be a great way to promote the hotel, as well as help the couple celebrate Valentine’s Day. The couple’s chipped in and brought them the bridal gown, tuxedo and arranged the photography. Qiao had also reserved all of its 220 street-facing rooms, for the illumination.
Watch out husbands, the Mrs is sure to want more than just breakfast in bed next Valentine’s Day!
