Apple’s new store in the Dubai Mall is a room with a view! Not only does it provide a glimpse of the world’s tallest building, the Burk Khalifa, but these views are afforded by a 180-foot wide motorized window made up of 18 carbon fiber panels. Created by Foster + Partners, the “Solar Wings” are designed to respond to the climate, cooling the store when the sun is at its hottest and opening in the evening to welcome people into the store. According to Apple, ‘each “Solar Wing” is locally fabricated from 340 carbon fiber reinforced polymer rods, and at 180 feet wide, the 18 panels make up one of the world’s largest kinetic art installations.’
Apple is also inviting people to use the windows to watch the dynamic fountain show that happens outside every evening.
Incidentally, Apple used the announcement of the launch of their new store to talk about their new rebranded “Today at Apple” workshops. These workshops will include “new sessions across photo and video, music, coding, art and design, and more, led by highly-trained team members. Apple Dubai Mall will also host high-profile events including live music, intimate conversations with film-makers and photographers, and live workshops with some of the world’s top talent. Events on opening day include Live Art with Myneandyours, and Artist Duos with musician Hamdan Al Abri and artist Sultan Al Ramahi.”
