Here’s something to bring up at your next team meeting at work: Haworth – an American office furniture company has created a unique alternative to that tired old couch in the employees’ lounge. They call it “Calmspace – a self-contained pod for taking naps at work.” The polygonal room or “pod” contains an angled mattress designed especially for 10, 15 and 20 minute power naps and is complete with a lighting system (created by Zyken- a Paris based team of health and wellness specialists) that lulls you to sleep and gently with a red glow and later wakes you with by changing to blue.
Haworth has pitched these cool cocoons alongside research findings that which claim that employee energy levels dip during the time between 11 am and 4 pm and short naps allow the employee to be well rested and more productive. The study was carried out in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and the European Sleep Centre so Haworth is definitely putting their money where their mouth is.
Can you convince your boss that your office needs one of these? Or maybe 50? We’re going to try for sure. We can easily see these fitting into the boho-cool work environment at Google (We’ve never been to the Google office, but we have watched The Internship and we’re told it’s pretty much the same thing) or some other cool California start-up. One thing’s for sure, any company that’s cool with napping on the job is definitely on our radar.
