Do you know the humble printer ink is 10 times more expensive than a bottle of vintage Dom Perignon champagne?

If we were to tell you that you’re probably paying more for your printer ink than you ever would for a bottle of vintage champagne, you’d probably just laugh it off! However, proving this as true is a recent survey which showed that consumers are paying way over the odds for replacement ink cartridges by buying branded ink instead of cheaper compatible alternatives.

As per the investigation by consumer group Which? overpriced printer ink has been observed to be 10 times more expensive than vintage champagne. It was also noted that essential printer ink ordered directly from a leading printer brand’s website comes to £1.89 per milliliter, with consumers in the UK purchasing around 50 million ink cartridges every year from high street chains as well as online.

By this measure, a bottle of Dom Perignon Vintage champagne at the same price as this would cost £1,417.50. Similarly, the ink would become more expensive than both Brent Crude Oil and Chanel No.5 perfume. Commenting on the results, Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: “Our research has found that the best third-party ink will produce good quality prints and massive savings. She further added, “Branded ink may cost significantly more while delivering similar results, so it’s worth shopping around to save money.” Well, point well noted!
