The worlds most expensive surfboard is handmade with 24k gold leaf

Sporting gear when gilded generally ceases to be what it was meant for. And if the said sport is one that demands certain aquatic escapades in saline water, then you can be rest assured that it will be cut out to be the toughest. In all this tough talk there comes along a gilded surfboard called Aureus. Considered to be the world’s first 24-karat gold leaf surfboard, this intricately created board consists of a plating that is rampant throughout the fiberglass. Lux surfboards is based in the UK and is an artist collaborative.

Irrespective of its gold specification, the Aureus continues to function as a fully functional surfboard. It has easily won the accolade of being one of the world’s most expensive surfboards, valued at GBP 125k which amounts to nearly $183,000. The board was created in a small studio in North Devon in England.

“Gold inspired man to create art for thousands of years and gilding something with gold always reveals its true nature. I feel the lavish use of 24-karat gold leaf throughout enhances the subtle wave of the fiberglass and imbues the curves of the board with a delicate luminosity,” said designer Ellie Miller.
