Sense of smell gets pricey as a Nose is insured for $8 million

If your bread and butter is earned through your nose, then you better take care of it just like this Dutch winemaker. Winemaker Ilja Gort insured his nose for $8 million! You must be wondering that what prompted him to take this bizarre policy. Well recently he heard that a man had lost his sense of smell in a car accdinet. So Mr. Gort was horrified to imagine if something like would occur in his life too. Gort, 47, said his nose is essential for him to produce top quality wines at his Chateau de la Garde vineyard in the Bordeaux region of France. Gort said, “It would mean that you cannot taste wine anymore. Tasting wine is something you do with your nose, not your mouth.”

Gort wasn’t the first wine tester to get coverage. Jonathan Thomas, the lead underwriter for the Watkins Syndicate at the Lloyd’s insurance market says that he has insured the senses of both taste and smell for wine taster Angela Mount for $20.1 million in 2003 for her bosses at British supermarket chain Somerfield.
