Joining the list of the world’s most expensive things is a 511-pound tuna that sold for a record-breaking $175,000 in Tokyo’s fish market. The gigantic tuna was caught off the northern tip of the main island Honshu and weighed four times the average Japanese man’s weight! The tuna was sold at Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market, known worldwide as the top place to buy fish. The record-breaking tuna was bought jointly by three buyers: two Tokyo restaurants and an entrepreneur from Hong Kong and divided up after the sale. The record price has led to celebrations among fish vendors as tuna consumption in Japan had declined due to the recession and concern over dwindling tuna stocks.
This is one tuna sale that the Tsukiji fish market will never forget.
