Looking for a new job? Well, offering you an unbelievably cool opportunity is Piel Island that is looking for someone to run a pub while also serving as the territory’s king! Yes, you read that right! Situated about half a mile off the Furness peninsula on the western coast of northern England, the island is open to tourists from April to September. It boasts of a lone pub – The Ship Inn which is looking for a suitable candidate to run it.
However, managing the pub could be rather heavy duty as the chosen one will also become ‘King’ of the island. As per tradition, the lucky person will have to wear a helmet and hold a sword while sitting in an ancient chair and having beer poured over them to be sworn in. The knight will also be required to help the king prevent any bull-baiting, cock-fighting or pigeon shooting’ on the island- all while coping with uncertain weather and a fair bit of isolation.
Commenting on the position, local guide John Murry said, ‘You can’t just nip across to Tesco for a loaf of bread when you’re on Piel Island. You’ll need to have dedication and a strong passion for isolation and peace and quiet. It takes a special personality.’
The previous pub managers and knights further noted, ‘We wish the very best to whomever takes up the highly rewarding challenge of being the next King/Queen of Piel Island and we can’t wait to be on the other side of the bar enjoying all the island has to offer.’
As Sandra Baines – head of visitor economy and culture at the council of Piel Island said, the job is probably “not the dream people might think it is.” However, if beer chugging with knightly duties sounds like something you’d be up for, you know where to head!
