The worlds most eccentric SUV the Mercedes-Benz G-Class will now go full electric

I have been eagerly waiting for Mercedes to introduce the beastly, V12-powered AMG G65 version of the current-generation G-Wagen; however, it appears that the German has different plans for it and take the brute SUV on the environment-friendly path. Am I surprised? No. Daimler’s Head of Digital Transformation, Sascha Pallenberg, took to Twitter to quote his boss, Daimler’s CEO, Ola Källenius as saying: “There will be a zero-emission EV version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.” An all-electric G-Class might sound completely absurd to its dyed-in-the-wool fans and Mercedes itself wasn’t too keen on doing it themselves. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger showed us an electric G-Wagen can be cool while retaining its beastly image. The former governor of California owns a G-Class that was converted into an EV by an Austrian company.

What’s interesting is that the automaker’s chief boss admits that discussions in the past within the company about potentially phasing out the G-Class, but an electric version can future proof the line-up. In the past there were discussions whether we should eliminate the model, the way I see things now I’d say the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class,” said Källenius. Mercedes-Benz is betting big on EVs and has pledged to add over 10 electric cars to its global lineup by 2022. But it will be interesting to see how the world reacts to a battery-powered G-Class. There’s no information on the specifications of the electric G-Class neither did Mercedes comment on when will it be launched, but it sure is going to be one hell of a machine.
