An American tourist faces upto two years in prison for posting a negative review on Tripadvisor for a Thai luxury resort

Writing a negative review on your hotel-stay online can get you disagreement or at the max a slew of comments. However, in the case of an American tourist, it got him a defamatory suit! Yes, that’s right! The Thai resort against which he posted an allegedly unfair review may soon face jail term and thousands in fine!

Wesley Barnes (who works in Thailand) claimed that the Sea View Resort located on Koh Chang island was apparently running the business of “modern-day slavery”. He further claimed that he dealt with “unfriendly staff” who “act like they don’t want anyone here” during a recent visit to the resort destination.

He posted his views on multiple sites including TripAdvisor and was later arrested for causing damage to the reputation of the Resort. Commenting on it, Koh Chang Police Colonel Thanapon Taemsara in a statement said, “The Sea View Resort owner filed a complaint that the defendant had posted unfair reviews on his hotel on the TripAdvisor website.”

The Resort also accused Barnes of rude behavior and refusal to pay a corkage fee for booze while further claimed that, “We chose to file a complaint to serve as a deterrent, as we understood he may continue to write negative reviews week after week for the foreseeable future.”

The American tourist was taken into custody but was soon released on bail. If found guilty, he will be liable to pay $6,329 and serve up to two years in prison. Whoever asked us to choose our words wisely was right after all!
