Dubai is building a city just for online shopping

E-commerce is the future of all things retails. And those he did not believe in the former now stand corrected as the pandemic has forced upon us a new way of life. With most of us quarantined in our houses, online purchasing (of basics or luxuries) seems to be the only solicited move forward.

Making this happen in the Emirate, is a new free trade zone for e-commerce named “Dubai Commercity,” an initiative launched by the government of Dubai in association with e Dubai Airport Freezone Authority (DAFZA) and property firm Wasl. Located adjacent to Dubai International Airport, the $3.2 million project will house 12 buildings including a business cluster, logistics center, and a social center.

Much like other free zones operating in the emirate, the ‘Dubai Commercity’ will offer benefits such as no corporate tax, no income tax, 100 percent foreign ownership, full repatriation of capital and profit, and no currency restrictions. Clients will also have access to AI-powered warehouses, and a social cluster of restaurants and cafes.

Commenting on it, Mohammed al Zarooni, director general of DAFZA said, “The need for world-class e-commerce services has never been greater. Having previously identified the region’s growing e-commerce market and given the traction witnessed by clients (going) online due to the pandemic, we are on track for the scheduled opening by the end of 2020.”

The first phase of ‘Dubai Commercity is expected to open in November this year.
