Editor picks – 20 destinations and luxury hotels in Asia that should be in your bucket list

12. Kyoto – Japan
One of Asia’s most underrated towns, Kyoto is familiar with quiet temples, sublime Zen gardens, colourful Shinto shrines and narrow alleys where geisha scurry to secret assignations. Not that it’s all temples and tradition: the city also hosts its share of hip cafes and modern art. Think of it as Tokyo but with a cultural twist. Be it the Kinkaku-ji or Ryoan-ji Temple’s, each temple is a unique marvel of its own kind. Improved neighbourhood structure makes it easier to get around the city and Kyoto’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed temples and historic monuments are the icing on the cake. Eigamura, or Kyoto Toei Studio Park is a working TV and movie set that doubles as a theme park. Gion, may not be Japan’s only geisha locality in the 21st century, the district is well defined by aged wooden buildings and exclusive Japanese restaurants.

Where to stay – Kyoto’s Ritz Carlton preserves Kyoto’s culture and blends it superbly with hints of the modernistic world. The hotel commands a sensational view of the Kamo-gawa River and the neighbouring Higashiyama Mountains. The spacious rooms are dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows and state-of-the-art technology. The hotel offers fine Japanese and Italian cuisines along with a swimming pool and spa.

Bustling with diversity, this city is ideally located by the coast. Home to an assortment of iconic restaurants, underground parties and lavish rooftop parties, this is a city that enjoys contrasts. When you visit Mumbai, be sure to visit Gateway of India, walk the Marine Drive promenade and for all our bargaining shopaholics, Colaba Causeway is Mumbai’s version of a flee market. Do not miss out on the street food that you can savor at Chowpatty beach and Juhu beach – this is authentic Mumbai food. If your feeling adventurous, hop on to a ferry from gateway of India and visit Elephanta Caves – a journey through ancient rock-cut caves.
