Most statues and murals that are towering high are anything but modern, yet nothing has really displaced them from their tall and long-standing glory. Still, all that will change soon as this week saw the closing at Gujarat for bids to design a $500 million statue and convention complex that is touted to be the tallest in the world. Tagged as the ‘Statue of Unity,’ the 600-feet tall statue will feature “independence leader Sardar Vallabhai Patel, who together with first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru worked to convince Indian princely states to join India.” Although the Statue of Liberty is no longer the tallest in the world anymore, this new installation will be almost twice its size. Simultaneously, the Statue of Unity will be four times taller than Christ the Redeemer statue that looks over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
However, the feat will take time as S. Jagdeesan, managing director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd., which is spearheading the project, added that construction isn’t due to start for at least another year as “bidding for a construction firm and finalizing an agreement will likely take that long.” The current process only would finalize “a firm to design and oversee the statue’s construction.”
The project will not just be building a statue; the $500 million projects will see “a hotel and convention center, a bridge to connect the island to the mainland, and a highway to a nearby town,” with the statue will be placed on top a 20-story building which could double up as “a museum as well as a hotel and convention center,” Mr. Jagdeesan said.
