Nike’s new Air Jordan XXX are a true tribute to Michael Jordan as both a player and a design collaborator. After Jordan himself asked his long time design partner Tinker Hatfield to begin work on a new shoe, Hatfield requested an iconic photo of Michael mid-slam dunk and got right to work. He then illustrated different versions of the 1988 photo and created some memorable artwork that inspired the shoe.
The shoe is heavy with symbols, from the triple XXX on the heel to the toe that bears the silhouette of Jordan. It features a new traction system and herringbone pattern on the sole and is crafted from a mix of woven, knit and printed materials including a knit cradle that keeps the heel in place and at the same time reduces the amount of glue needed to make the shoe. Hatfield designed a shoe to match Jordan’s request to “make it look fast,” and he certainly came through.
The Air Jordan XXX hits stores and the Nike website on February 12.
