Crashed and rebuilt twice without matching numbers, what remains of this rare Porsche 911 GT2 R could still be worth $800,000

Crashed Porsche 911s typically end up in the scrapyard or as donor cars for other projects. However, this particular 911 with racing history defies all the odds. Despite being wrecked and rebuilt a few times, this ultra-rare Porsche 911 GT2 R could still command a staggering $800,000 price tag. With only 10 examples of the 993 GT2 R having been built, it’s no wonder that this Frankenstein 911 is hitting all the high notes in its estimated value, even though it’s missing many of its original parts.

Set to go under the hammer with RM Sotheby’s, this car with chassis #004 was originally built to take on the greats in the GT2 class of endurance racing. During one of its motorsport outings in 1999, this chassis suffered a heavy crash, with the shell being written off and the chassis number transplanted to a new shell.

The damaged shell was rebuilt, and this car returned to professional motorsports at the hands of German race car driver Klaus Abbelen, husband of the Queen of the Nurburgring, the late Sabine Schmitz.

This 911 GT2 R was later sold to The Stuttgart Legends Collection and partially restored in 2017, where a new partial chassis was welded in to replace more damage. As it stands, the car has an engine and gearbox of “unknown lineage” and has no chassis number and no claims to its previous identity.

The auction site urges interested parties to get in touch with them to figure out just how much work the car needs to get up and running again. That said, the car will still qualify for historic GT races once it’s done, so there’s that. The estimated value sits between $500,00 and $800,000, despite its Frankenstein nature, or perhaps, because of it.

For reference, a Porsche 993 GT2 R in pristine condition sold in 2022 for $665,000 at a Pebble Beach auction. For the deep-pocketed Porsche enthusiast, this Frankenstein Porsche 993 might be worth every penny of its asking price, crashed, rebuilt, and all, purely because there’s just 1 in 10 chances to own a car like this.
