Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth because we don’t want our illusions destroyed. What are these illusions? Currently, they are that the pandemic is over, the world is safe, and never again will our planet be in a situation like this, and if we ever are, we will be prepared to combat the chaos. The truth in this matter is stated by none other than Mr. Warren Buffet who the world trusts won’t make causal claims, and his words are those that need a serious ear. The American Billionaire said that he believes another pandemic was on the horizon, which could be worse than that of COVID-19. Agreed, it’s not the best thing to hear, but the message was conveyed in an interview with CNBC’s Buffett & Munger: A Wealth of Wisdom show.
The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway said that even though these situations are manageable, the world as a whole is not prepared for mass-scale prevention. He was quoted as saying, “there will be another pandemic. We know that there is a nuclear, chemical, biological, and now cyber threat. Each of them has dire possibilities…It doesn’t seem like it’s something that society is fully prepared to deal with”. The 90-year-old magnate who ranks ninth in the Forbes billionaire ranking announced that the main lesson that the coronavirus has taught him is that the world is not prepared to deal with emergencies. “I learned that people don’t know as much as they think they do. But what is most learned is that the pandemic could be seen coming and that this is not the worst that can be imagined,” said the 90-year-old magnate. “Society has a hard time preparing for remote situations, which are possible and will happen sooner or later.”
Not too long ago Bill Gates also shared a similar sentiment. He mentioned to prevent the hardship of this last year from happening again; pandemic preparedness must be taken as seriously as we take the threat of war. The Gates Foundation has invested $1.75 billion in the fight against Covid-19, and Melinda Gates states, “Until vaccines reach everyone, new clusters of disease will keep popping up. Those clusters will grow and spread. Schools and offices will shut down again. The cycle of inequality will continue.”
