If your fueling checklist looks like this — find a free pump at the station, unscrew the gas cap, fill up, close the gas cap, drive off — you’re very much in the majority. There simply aren’t too many ways to get it wrong. But it does happen. The security camera at a Shell gas pump in Costa Mesa, California, caught the driver of a very special supercar get it wrong. The car in question is a Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, a $3.6 million hypercar. The 1-of-60 Chiron pulls into the gas station, the owner steps into the store while he’s filling up, and then in a moment where mindfulness leaves the chat, drives off with the pump still attached.
Unlike the typical “supercar driver fail” video, there’s a largely undramatic end to the video. The Bugatti driver does rip the nozzle out of the pump, still attached to his 1,479 horsepower, quad-turbo, 8.0-liter hypercar. But thankfully that appears to be the extent of the damage. It easily could have been a very different story if the Bugatti was still being fueled up when he drove away — picture lots of fuel flying around an engine that runs so hot it needs 10 radiators to keep temperatures in check!
The owner of the Bugatti got off lucky, and has reportedly paid the Shell station for damages caused, a paltry $200. The video on TikTok has racked up 70,000+ views in the short time since it was uploaded, which proves that the internet loves to see rich people mess up. Fortunately for this hypercar owner, the ending wasn’t quite the fireworks show many were likely expecting. But what is comforting is that no one’s above making a stupid, potentially-disastrous mistake every now and then.
