It’s been almost two years since Pagani revealed the Utopia, a spectacular replacement for the Huayra. After much anticipation, the hypercar manufacturer has followed it up with a Roadster variant which retains all the good bits from its coupe sibling without any weight penalty. Convertibles are typically heavier than the coupe versions because of the chassis strengthening that’s usually needed and the additional weight of the folding roof mechanism. However, the Pagani Utopia Roadster tips the scale at 2,822 pounds without fluids, which is exactly the same as the coupe counterpart.
To achieve this, Pagani meticulously redesigned the Carbo-Titanium monocoque of the hypercar to increase torsional rigidity without adding weight. Furthermore, instead of a motorized foldable roof, the Utopia Roadster gets a removable hardtop that features a glass panel to make the cabin feel more airy. However, there’s a catch.
The hardtop cannot be stored inside the car when not in use. In case you’re wondering what happens when it starts to rain, there is a supplementary soft top that fits neatly into a suitcase mounted behind the two seats. Additional storage comes in the form of two matching suitcases made of carbon fiber and leather that fit in compartments on either side of the fire-breathing V12.
Except for the removable roof, the Roadster looks almost identical to the coupe. Not only does it retain the dual-rounded headlights, sculptural grille, and beautiful quad exhaust tips, but also the coupe’s butterfly doors. The example pictured here is finished in a stunning shade of Habanero Red with exposed carbon fiber weaves. The ornate cabin is also practically unchanged with its sculptural gauges and switchgear.
The Roadster also retains the Mercedes-AMG-sourced twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine. Capable of churning out 852 horsepower and 811 pound-feet of torque, the power is sent to the rear wheels via an electro-mechanical differential in the rear axle. The top speed is electronically limited to 217mph. Just like the coupe, buyers get to choose from a seven-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automated manual with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. Pagani says it will build only 130 examples of the Utopia Roadster, each priced at €3.1 million (roughly $3.6 million).
