There’s a new champion for the title of the world’s most expensive handbag. You may have heard that phrase be used to describe rare Birkins and Kellys, but this bag is not an Hermès at all. It is in fact a diamond encrusted purse created by jeweler Robert Mouawad. The heart shaped bag has been handcrafted from 18k gold and is studded with a whopping 4,500 diamonds amounting to 381.92 carats.
The Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse is, of course, a one-off item and in 2010 it set the Guinness World Record for being the most valuable handbag with an original price of $3.8 million. While most of the diamonds used are colorless, 106 yellow and 56 pink diamonds were incorporated into the design. Artisans spend around 8,800 hours creating this masterpiece.
The bag may have set its record years ago, but it has only now been put up for sale. The sale will be handled by Christie’s and the auction house will take the pricy creation on a tour through Hong Kong, Geneva and London to generate interest in the one-of-a-kind purse.
