These Sacagawea dollar coins flew on board one of the most important Space Shuttle flights in the US space program. The 7 coins traveled more than 2 million miles in orbit and have been sold for over $500,000 each at auction.

Space-flown coins with a story that links America’s frontiers of exploration have shattered auction records. Seven 22-karat gold Sacagawea dollars, struck by the United States Mint specifically for spaceflight, became available for the first time in public ownership through an auction and together realized more than half a million dollars apiece in some cases. This was the first public sale of federal US coins created for a space mission and one of the few modern pattern issues that collectors can legally own.

The STS-93 was the first shuttle to be commanded by a woman

These historic pieces flew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia during STS-93, launched on July 23, 1999. The mission holds a special place in history as the first commanded by a woman, Colonel Eileen Collins. During its nearly five-day flight, Columbia orbited Earth about 80 times, covering roughly 1.8 million miles while deploying the 50,222-pound Chandra X-ray Observatory into high orbit. Only 12 of the gold dollars made the journey, with the rest never leaving Earth.

Their provenance is museum grade by any standard. Struck at the Mint in West Point, flown aboard Columbia, secured for decades at Fort Knox, and graded by PCGS before being offered in a Mint-authorized sale, they represent a record-setting crossover between two collecting worlds. Rare US pattern coinage has long commanded strong prices, while space memorabilia has seen explosive demand. Together, they created a perfect storm, with two coins reaching $550,000 each, a figure rivaling serious supercar money.

CollectSPACE noted the impact, calling the results “a new record for the most ever paid for an artifact or memento flown aboard a space shuttle.” Auctioneer Stack’s Bowers Galleries described them as among the most important offerings in modern American numismatics. “These space-flown dollars transcend any single collectible category,” said Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers. “They stand as true American treasures.”

The coins were part of a mintage of just 39 experimental pieces, struck with an early engraved tailfeathers reverse design later abandoned in production. The 12 best examples were selected for flight, while seven emerged at this auction and five remain permanently archived. A few had been placed on display in the early 2000s before disappearing into secure storage, heightening anticipation for their eventual release.

By combining rarity, impeccable provenance, and direct ties to both American coinage and space exploration, the Sacagawea gold dollars set a new benchmark. They are more than numismatic curiosities or shuttle souvenirs. They are artifacts of national achievement, now firmly established among the most valuable modern US coins ever sold.
