Billionaire heir Anant Ambani made history as the first Asian to win this global humanitarian honor, yet his wrist stole the show with a custom $5 million Richard Mille watch carved entirely from sapphire that took over 1,000 hours to perfect.

Anant Ambani stepped onto a Washington, DC, stage to accept a Global Humanitarian Award, and the moment carried two parallel messages. One was about animal welfare, conservation, and scale. The other was impossible to miss for anyone who glanced at his wrist. The son of Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, was wearing a Richard Mille that most collectors will never encounter outside of rumor and reference photos.

The watch was a Richard Mille RM 056 Tourbillon Chronograph Sapphire, a model that already sits deep in grail territory. First launched in 2012 as a Felipe Massa–associated piece, the RM 056 was produced in a microscopic run of just five watches. It also marked a turning point for the brand. This was Richard Mille’s first watch with a case made entirely from synthetic sapphire, and it quickly became one of the most important references in modern high-complication watchmaking.

What made Ambani’s watch different is that it does not appear to be one of the original five. Multiple watch accounts have described it as a piece unique, a one-of-one RM 056 Sapphire finished with bright orange accents and a matching orange strap. In other words, not just rare, but singular, built outside the already absurdly small production run.

The RM 056 case itself is the kind of object that sounds almost theoretical. The front bezel, middle case, and back are all milled from solid blocks of sapphire. Sapphire ranks 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, just below diamond. It is nearly impossible to scratch, but extremely difficult to machine. One mistake during cutting or milling and the entire component is ruined.

Each case requires more than 1,000 hours of work. Roughly 430 hours go into pre-forming the sapphire components, followed by around 350 hours of polishing to achieve full optical clarity. The case is assembled with 20 grade-5 titanium spline screws and sealed using nitrile O-rings to achieve water resistance. It is transparency executed as industrial engineering rather than a visual gimmick.

Inside sits the caliber RMCC1, a highly skeletonized manual-winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes, running seconds, and a split-seconds chronograph with a 30-minute totalizer. It also features power-reserve, torque, and function indicators, tools that make sense given how tightly tuned the movement is. Built from grade-5 titanium and LITAL, an aluminum-lithium alloy used in aerospace and Formula 1, the movement is exceptionally light for its complexity, with some executions weighing under 10 grams. Power reserve is around 70 hours, impressive for a tourbillon rattrapante. The one-of-one piece is believed to be worth an astounding $5 million.

The context of the moment mattered. Ambani was receiving the Global Humanitarian Award for Animal Welfare, presented by the Global Humane Society, the international arm of the American Humane Society. The award places him in a lineage that includes Hollywood icons such as Betty White and Shirley MacLaine, as well as US presidents like John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton. He is the youngest recipient and the first Asian to receive it.

Vantara is spread across 3,500 acres

The citation centers on Vantara, the massive wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation initiative he established in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Spread across roughly 3,500 acres, Vantara houses more than 150,000 animals from over 2,000 species and operates as an off-display facility focused on long-term care and science-led conservation. Its elephant care center, described as the world’s largest, includes a dedicated hospital and nearly 1,000 acres for rehabilitation.

Within the watch world, Ambani is also known as one of Richard Mille’s most significant patrons. His personal collection reportedly includes some of the brand’s rarest and most expensive creations, including the RM 56-02 Sapphire with a cable-suspended movement, the RM 27-02 Rafael Nadal, the RM52-04 Skull Blue Sapphire, and ultra-rare jeweled and sapphire-cased pieces that are rarely seen publicly. After all, it was after seeing one of Anant’s Richard Mille watches that Mark Zuckerberg developed a strong liking for serious high-end timepieces.
