Beyoncé gets criticized for spilling $20,000 champagne into a hot tub in new music video

Beyoncé (better known these days as Queen Bey) is courting controversy in the music video for her song “Feeling Myself,” which also features Nicki Minaj. In the video, the singer empties a bottle of high end champagne into a hot tub in a gesture which some are calling wasteful and unnecessary.

The alcohol in question is supposedly a bottle of $20,000 Armand de Brignac Champagne. The brand, sometimes referred to as Ace of Spades, is owned by Bey’s hubby Jay-Z and produces champagne in the $300 to $20,000 price range. Since the business is all in the family, presumably Beyoncé didn’t have to pay anything for it, but fans and critics are calling out Beyoncé on Twitter for the blatant show of wealth.

In this instance, it seems odd to point a finger at Beyoncé considering nobody can be sure of whether the drink in the bottle was real champagne, for all we know it was just a prop. Also, if we’re really criticizing ostentatiousness in music videos, then any number of artists have blown money on elaborate sets, designer outfits, cars and expensive champagne in the past without attracting the ire of Twitter users. In this case, Beyoncé is simply following the lead of many champagne loving artists before her.
