Jeff Bezos’ late mother made one of the greatest family investments in history by handing out two checks totaling $245,000 to back her hardworking son’s fledgling company, Amazon. Her investment delivered a 31,227,014% return, turning her capital into $76.6 billion.

Jackie Bezos, the mother of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, was far more than the woman who gave him life. She gave him confidence, a stellar upbringing (as a teen mom), and became the wind beneath his wings. The early Amazon investor passed away on August 14 at her home in Miami, after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. What stands out most is how she embraced motherhood with unwavering devotion.

In the 61-year-old tech tycoon’s own words, she “pounced on the job of loving me with ferocity.” Along with her love, Jackie Bezos placed unshakable faith in her son. She never tried to dissuade him from leaving his cushy Wall Street job. Instead, in 1995, fully aware of the risk of losing everything, she invested $245,573 in Amazon alongside her husband, Mike Bezos. At the time, the couple knew little about e-commerce, and the internet was still a mystery to most. But what wasn’t foreign to Jackie was her belief in her son and his abilities.

The meteoric rise of Amazon

Today, according to Luxurylaunches’ calculations, Jackie’s stake in Amazon stands at an astounding 332 million shares, valued at $76.69 billion at the current price of $230.98 per share. According to Bloomberg in 2018, Jeff’s parent owned Amazon shares worth $30 billion. This fortune grew from 16.6 million shares she held before Amazon’s June 2022 20-for-1 stock split, which multiplied her holdings twentyfold. It’s the ultimate example of a $245,573 leap of faith turning into one of the greatest family investments in history. It is a return few sons could ever hope to give back to the hand that guided them, taught them to walk, and signed that first check in blind faith and unconditional love.

Jeff Bezos, who has often celebrated his parents publicly, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media: “Her adulthood started a little bit early when she became my mom at the tender age of 17. That couldn’t have been easy, but she made it all work.” He added, “After a long fight with Lewy Body Dementia, she passed away today, surrounded by so many of us who loved her, her kids, grandkids, and my dad. I know she felt our love in those final moments. We were all so lucky to be in her life. I hold her safe in my heart forever.”

Beyond being a devoted mother, Jackie ran a home filled with board games, science projects, and storytelling. She also made a lasting impact through the Bezos Family Foundation, which she and Mike launched in 2000 to fund educational programs. Today, it stands as one of the most prominent charities giving back a slice of the fortunes built by Amazon. In August 2024, they donated $185.7 million, to the Aspen Institute to create a new center focused on empowering young people. They also gifted a staggering $500 million to UNICEF’s Child Nutrition Fund in March 2025 to fight global child and maternal undernutrition.

Jackie Bezos left an indelible mark not only on her son’s life and career but also on the lives of countless others. Her legacy is one of love, vision, and a belief so strong it helped change the world.

Note: Amazon’s share price closed at $230.98 at the time of publication.
