Steve Jobs’s billionaire widow, Laurene, may sail on a $120 million superyacht and live in a $175 million Malibu estate. But she is also acing in the philanthropy game by quietly honoring her husband’s memory by donating billions and changing the lives of millions.

“Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me,” Steve Jobs told The Wall Street Journal in 1993. His life partner, Laurene Powell Jobs, heard and understood this sentiment, honoring it in the years following his death. Today, she has emerged as a quiet powerhouse of philanthropy, inheriting Steve’s stakes in Walt Disney and Apple after his passing in 2011.

While the stock values of both companies have skyrocketed tenfold in the past decade, Laurene’s current fortune is estimated at around $12.2 billion. This is largely because the mother of three has been exceptionally generous, giving extensively over the years, and her nearly constant net worth reflects her ongoing philanthropy.

Young Laurene with the late Steve Jobs

A Stanford graduate, Laurene inherited immense wealth after Steve Jobs’ passing, but it was clear from the start what she intended to do with it: give most of it away. “I’m not interested in building on the legacy of an inheritance, and my children know that. Steve wasn’t interested in that. If I live long enough, that inheritance will end with me,” she once said.

True to her word, Laurene has established two key charitable organizations to drive her philanthropic efforts. The first, College Track, is a California-based nonprofit helping underserved and often undocumented youth gain access to higher education and prepare for careers. The second, Emerson Collective, focuses on educational initiatives and creating equal opportunities for marginalized groups.

Her ventures extend to companies dedicated to lowering barriers to healthcare and education. This commitment may stem from her modest upbringing; despite limited financial resources for college, Laurene funded her education at the University of Pennsylvania through a mix of savings, loans, work-study jobs, scholarships, and family support. Now, with substantial wealth at her disposal, she works quietly but relentlessly to make a difference.

Notably, she plans to invest $3.5 billion over the next decade through her Waverley Street Foundation, focusing on sustainable solutions for people and communities. “I inherited my wealth from my husband, who did not care to accumulate it. I am doing this in honor of his work and have dedicated my life to distributing it effectively, helping people and communities in a sustainable way,” she has stated.

While her philanthropic efforts are admirable, Laurene also allows herself to enjoy her fortune. She owns the $140 million, 260-foot superyacht Venus, a Feadship masterpiece designed by Philippe Starck, which features state-of-the-art iMacs for navigation. Although Steve Jobs never set foot on the yacht, it has become a symbol of her understated luxury. The vessel recently made headlines when it accidentally collided with a Mexican billionaire’s $250 million Lady Moura superyacht. Earlier this year, Venus was spotted cruising the Pacific, visiting destinations like Queensland, New Caledonia, and Fiji.

In addition, Laurene owns a $70 million mansion in San Francisco, the city’s most expensive property, with seven bedrooms spread across three levels. The billionaire businesswoman has been crafting a compound spanning multiple parcels in one of the most affluent enclaves in the country. She recently bought a $94 million oceanfront estate in Malibu’s Paradise Cove, her fourth property in the prestigious area. Powell Jobs has also made significant investments, such as acquiring a 20% stake in Monumental Sports & Entertainment, valued at $4.1 billion.

Even philanthropists deserve a break, and Laurene Powell Jobs exemplifies the balance between purposeful giving and enjoying the fruits of her labor. Her work and life stand as a testament to honoring a legacy while building her own.
